Altar table and plinth - a clever combination working for a Grade 1 Listed Building!
St John the Baptist Church, Axbridge is a Grade 1 listed building. Work began on the current building in 1400’s and the church has many features of tremendous architectural interest. Today the Church is a vital part of the community and Fullers Finer Furniture were delighted to be commissioned to design and craft a table and plinth for this beautiful, prestigious building.
The brief was for an altar table on a plinth, designed to be in keeping with its imposing surroundings, yet practical and easy to move, to meet the needs of a modern church community.
The plinth was made with a top surface in engineered solid oak panelling with a contrasting black walnut nosing and risers made in a natural oak to match the floor. The plinth had inset wheels for ease of movement, with a cleverly designed, stabilising screw down foot, in each corner, accessed from the top with an Allen key.
The nave altar designed to sit on top was made in solid oak with a decorative frame made in a Gothic Arch shape to mirror the chancel arch situated above it. The overall design of the two pieces ensured they had sufficient presence and grandeur for such a prestigious position, without compromising on the need for easy manoeuvrability.
